Just as a patient’s own joint can wear out, the components of a total, resurfacing or partial joint replacement can also wear out over time. This can happen for a variety of reasons, but is most commonly due to long term wear and tear over years or decades. When this happens, patients can experience pain, clicking, swelling, and instability in their joint replacement. Typically, patients would require another surgery to correct the problem.
